You may have a dream and you may have some goals. Many people struggle with the simple first step; "Where do I begin?" Here's my take on what you should focus on before taking any steps forward.
Though nothing in this life is guaranteed, success being among those things, there are multiple things you can no do to foster your success. Most common pieces of advice are something like this.
- Plan ahead and plan well.
- Stay focused.
- Work hard.
- Dream big.
- Invest in yourself.
- Avoid time wasters.
- Write down your goals.
- Get up early.
- Learn from the people you admire.
Just to mention a few. I endorse all these advices above as they do make a lot of sense and are actual tools to get things done. They support the idea of being effective rather than keeping busy, and that is also being smart. I will get back to you with more advices, but today we'll start with something else.
What I have come to realize over the years as I have been faced with different kind of challenges and choises, being forced to choose should I stand up for my beliefs and values, and not to get into things that I don't actually value, is that it's crucial to KNOW YOUR VALUES AND UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WANT THE THINGS YOU WANT. Before you can even start listing and making the changes in your life to foster your success, you need to have a clear idea of who you are.
So let me be more specific. There are people who crave for success and whatever field you are in you will meet ruthless and spineless people. (Just to be honest.) They can be your rivals, partners or employers. They are everywhere, like a disease that will never heal. Some want to use you, some try to defeat you, but mostly they try to benefit from you in one way or another. They will make promises and offer you opportunities that at that time seem like a great deal for you. Unless you know who you are and your values you'll be a very easy target for these kind of people and before you know it you'll be doing the things you never wanted in the first place.
When you know youself and your values it's easier to know when to say yes, when to say no, and also when to demand more.
I always say that the strong ones don't fall in the storm but it's better if you don't even swing in the wind. That is standing up for something you really believe in and holding on to that. So before you can start controlling your career you need to control your thoughts, actions and life in general, and it all starts with unifying yourself with your values. As far as I know there's no sense in success just to be succesful. It's not a reason enough. It's like wanting to be famous for the sake of being famous. It's just plain stupid.
It is too often that people choose the easy way to success only to realize they have lost themselves. My suggestion to you is to have a powerful and inspiring "WHY" to the things you do and promote. We can all do things just for the sake of doing them, but I encourage you to have a bigger reason and more clear sense of why.
Don't be like the rest of them, just because it's so damn easy. Know your worth and make your WHY worth something too.
